There is a 75% chance that the phone you are currently using is an android enabled device. Android is in popular demand by many users due to its flexibility. But what about Businesses?
Where The User’s Love For Android Began
The movement began in 2008 when the HTC Dream launched the first android phone. The operating system was cheap and rusty back then which resulted in several unsavory reputations. The operating system has experienced several improvements and a tremendous increase in its user base over the last 11 years. Particularly in recent years where the operating system has taken the mobile industry by storm and became the standard mobile operating system.
- Various devices to choose from
- Prices to match your specifications
- Customization
- Rugged devices
- User-friendly
Consumers are usually the talking point. Why don’t we also consider businesses? Will it be embraced by brands? Android Enterprise is recently generating massive mentions.
Android for your Business
In 2014, Google launched a business-driven environment. The 5.0 Lollipop version of android as a selective solution for companies to incorporate and offer a general group of APIs for managing devices. The platform was unable to compete with the business solutions provided by the iOS back then as it was unable to cover the requirements of every business. Recently, there have been several improvements in Android Enterprise particularly the ease of use and security which brought about a shift in the market. Recent reports have discovered that in 2019, 78% of delivery business phones would run on the Android operating system which is about 300 million android devices for business purposes. But what are the key reasons why companies switch Android Enterprise?
- Flexible device management
- Containerization
- Rapid deployment
- Price
- Tailored devices like rugged smartphones
- Security
Security
In certain circles, the iOS from Apple for a long time has been regarded as the most secure operating system between the two. However, is this still the situation?
The comparison between the two operating systems:
- Apple’s operating system is a closed system. Apple doesn’t release its source code to app developers, and the owners of iPhones and iPads can’t modify the code on their phones themselves.
- Android devices are the opposite, relying on open-source code, meaning that the owners of these devices can tinker with their phones and tablet’s operating systems.
Android has been rated higher than iOS in several aspects by Gartner such as safety against exploits, kernel security, network protection, work area isolation and many more which can all be discovered in the 2019 Gartner report.
Here is an overview provided by Jason Bayton:

There is more: Flexibility, Security, and Privacy
Recently, there was a risen trend where individuals began to bring their smartphones to workplaces rather than using multiple devices. Having separate devices for the work area and private life turned out to be extremely unproductive. Consequently, clashes began to develop between security and privacy because of the combination of private and work data in a single device. The approach of containerization was established as a result of the increasing demand for a secure BYOD solution. This is a new method of enjoying a hassle-free system to technological improvement for your business.
Containerization
Just like the word, containerization is having the capacity to isolate your private data from business-related content. Such as “work” and “play”. This purely develops a work area where access would be granted to an employee by an employer on company relevant files that they can view and use. This work area can be referred to as encrypted containers that are integrated into personal devices. This enables the work area on your device to be accessed by the corporate without interfering with your data. This facilitates communication between the corporate data and the employee within the encrypted work area.
Banks trust in Android
Many banks and financial institutions are now deploying Android Enterprise solutions, which provide choice via a range of fully-managed devices as well as enabling Bring-your-own-Device (BYOD) programs. For example, 85% of the work devices at the Fortune 500 investment bank Jeffries are BYOD Android devices. Enabling some of their 4700 employees to be more flexible.
Remember
Always take into account when migrating to Android Enterprise (AE), AE would not be compatible with Kerberos (the authentication standard) and Single-Sign-On implementations. Therefore infrastructural modifications would be encountered when enabling Kerberos AE and SSO.
Until now, only two solutions are available where these modifications are not required which are Hypergate and Samsung Knox. Former works only on Samsung Devices – Hypergate, on the other hand, is device agnostic.
For the investment bank Jefferies, with its BYOD approach, Hypergate was the only solution. Hypergate provides Jefferies an on-premise SSO authentication to its’s Windows authentication infrastructure. Enabling them to complete their work on their phone in a fast, effective and secure way. Learn more about how Jefferies used Android Enterprise and Hypergate to mobilizes its team.
